Mohamed Elmaki Ahmed:
The UK witnessed historic local, mayoral, police and crime commissioner elections on 2 May 2024.
The result was a huge victory for the Labour Party, plus a major defeat and a clear setback for the ruling Conservative Party.
While the Conservative Party lost more than 470 councillors and control of 10 councils, the Labour Party has gained the majority of voters’ support, regarding councillors and Mayors.
The Labour Party won 1,158 seats in England , The Liberal Democrats 522, The Conservative Party 515, The Green Party 181, Residents 48, the Workers Party of Britain 4, and Reform UK 2 seats
In a remarkable victory, Sadiq Khan (Labour) , who called months ago for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, was re-elected for the third time as the Mayor of London.
Khan wrote on ‘’LinkedIn’’ (Londoners said no to division, no to hate, and yes once again to diversity, unity and hope).
Labour’s success in local elections strongly indicates that a majority of voters would support the Labour Party because they need reforms in all aspects of life.
The results of the local election revealed that millions of people are fed up with the Conservative Party’s negative policies, especially after the British withdrawal from the EU ( Brexit), economic instability, and the crisis of illegal immigrants.
But the important significance of the local elections indicates the Labour leader Keir Starmer is set to become the next Prime Minister.
After Labour’s sweeping victory in local elections, Starmer has expressed pleasure and sent a message to the Conservative Party.
He said ‘’I’m pleased with the results, people want change, they want to change the Conservative Party’’ He added, that the results ‘’sent a direct message to Rishi Sunak The Prime Minister and the leader of the Conservative Party ’’.
After 14 years of Tory rule ( conservative governments), the UK political, and social climate will witness intense competition in the coming months until the date of the general election, which will be announced later by the Prime Minister.
Despite the big victory of the Labour Party in the local elections both main parties, are facing big challenges on economic affairs, Palestinian human rights, and how to deal with the proposal of the two-state solution (Israeli state and Palestinian state) to improve their policies and plans to gain more voters’ confidence and trust.
I cast my vote in local elections. I have voted for the Labour party because I support reforms everywhere.
Democracy is one of the strongest values in the UK, and the transparent electoral process is practical evidence of the benefits of the strong British state institutions.
Democracy and the atmosphere of people’s genuine participation are strongly needed in the Middle East, to achieve political reforms, respect human rights, end wars, modernise societies, and enhance independence.
If the Labour Party wins the next general election, significant changes could happen locally and worldwide.
The new message from London must be heard in the third world, especially in African and Arab states which confirms that the world is smaller than a global village, and heavily influenced by the growing pressure of the great powers.
The UK will play an additional vital role after the next general elections.
