Mohamed Elmaki Ahmed:
When President Joe Biden was forced to quit as a nominee, for the next presidential election, the US experienced dramatic political events.
He withdrew from the race under growing pressure from key leaders in the Democratic Party, after he performed poorly against former President Donald Trump.
Biden announced his support for Vice President Kamala Harris as a nominee in November 2024.
Harris quickly got the support of the key leaders in her party and generous donations.
If she wins, she will be the first woman to sit on the president’s chair.
But Trump is a big challenge. Some Americans look at him as a hero after he was shot in an assassination attempt during a campaign.
Trump is launching attacks against his new campaign opponent Harris, and he thinks it is easier to defeat her than Biden.
However, she became a strong competitor after she received support from her party and minorities.
Former President Obama told Harris on the telephone, “We called to say Michelle and I couldn’t be prouder to endorse you and to do everything we can to get you through this election and into the Oval Office”.
This is an important support, especially when the former first lady Michelle Obama said to Harris “I am proud of you, this is going to be historic”.
Harris seemed so happy in a video during a telephone call after receiving strong endorsements from Obama and Michelle.
According to Reuters, ‘’Obama, the first US black president, remains one of the most popular figures in the Democratic party even after more than a decade has passed since he was last elected’’.
Polling shows according to CNN that Harris has a good chance of winning. In that climate, Harris started her campaign with clear and strong statements.
She addressed the new generation, minorities, and human rights issues.
For example, after she met with Israeli Prime Minister, Netanyahu, during his visit to the USA in July 2024, she said in a televised statement about the humanitarian situation in Gaza: ‘’We cannot allow ourselves to become numb to the suffering and I will not be silent’’.
The Vice President and the presidential nominee added a clear position: ‘’What has happened in Gaza over the past nine months is devastating’’.
She did not ignore the Palestinian children when she spoke about the ‘’Images of dead children and desperately hungry people fleeing for safety, sometimes displaced for the second, third or fourth time’’.
She insisted ‘’Israel has a right to defend itself ‘’. She announced her support for establishing a Palestinian state and urged Netanyahu and Hamas to reach a ceasefire deal.
These attitudes indicate that new developments might occur in the USA’s foreign policy under Harris’s leadership.
If Harris wins, her legal background as an attorney might push her to open a new American role in the world.
But one of the main challenges is to support practically not verbally people’s human rights in Sudan, Palestine, Yemen, Syria, and other crisis zones, to restore America’s lost credibility in the Middle East.
